The grapes for the Erika Obermeyer Syrah 2017 were harvested from a 16 and 8 year old vineyard in Firgrove, Stellenbosch planted on decomposed granite. Fermented in open top barrels with 3–4 punch downs per day. Matured in 1st-4th fill 300-litre and 500-litre French oak barrels for 14 months. Bottled at 14%.
Nose: The nose is alluring perfumed, showing vibrant aromatics of dark-toned fruit with interwoven cocoa, cassis, salty liquorice, pepper spice and fynbos.
Palate: Deeply complex, the palate delivers an elegant yet textured mouthfeel.
Finish: A silky smooth and polished finish.
Erika Obermeyer graduated with a BSc and BSc Honours in Wine Biotechnology in 1998 and was appointed as Assistant Winemaker at Kleine Zalze in Stellenbosch in 1999. In 2005 she accepted a winemaker position at Graham Beck Wines achieving the position of Cellar Master of Still Wines. In 2016 Erika decided to go it alone and established Erika O Wines, a boutique winery specifically aimed at producing small batches of hand-crafted, distinctive and terroir specific wines from selected vineyards across the Western Cape winelands.
